In an almost identical storyline to a Molson Dry commercial, a guy spots an attractive woman on a dance floor.
He goes over and whispers sweet nothings into her ear as she makes doubtful faces. He's obviously offered to buy her a beer and they go over to the bar.
She thanks him and proceeds to take her beer, as well as his, and walks away--bringing it to her glossy, blonde girlfriend. He looks on with a silly smile, realizing the mistake he'd made. The gals put their arms around each other and smile at him.
The lipstick lesbians in this commercial come across as a bit alien. Typically, they are there for the male gaze, almost fulfilling his fantasy but staying out of reach.
Beer companies are well represented in The Commercial Closet, largely due to an effort in the mid-1990s to pull away from the industry's longterm sexist advertising themes that objectified women. Such commercials were summed up by the Swedish Bikini Team ads from Stroh Brewing Co. for Old Milwaukee. Looking for new material to mine, brewers began extensively playing with gay and transgender themes in their advertising. However, because beer drinkers are stereotypically macho, the tone of many of the ads were more often negative.

When we welcomed in the year 2000, the West Nile Virus was almost unheard of. After all, it only concerns people living around the Nile River, right? It is now in almost every state of the union. It kills over 2% of those who get infected. Thousands upon thousands of dead birds, dogs, horses and chickens are being found infected with this exotic killer. Mosquitoes carry it from mammal to mammal to mice to people to pets, and from pets back to people. Thousands of people here in the USA were infected last year. A simple mosquito bite is no longer an unimportant little red spot. A quick research project is to look at a map posted on the web displaying infection rates; it is quite sobering.In reading personal accounts of the different plagues, I noticed some important points. There were usually 3 completely different expressions of the plague: bubonic (swelling glands), pneumonic (lung congestion with flu-like symptoms), and septicemic (pathogenic bacteria in the bloodstream). Often nurses, doctors, and those who buried the dead never contracted the plague. The survivors telling their stories never agreed upon a preventive, yet I noticed several different authors mentioning vinegar and smoke as a possible defense against the plague.I read of one old couple who served the sick and never got ill. They strongly believed their immunity was the result of the use of herbal vinegar, which they put on their hair, clothes, and even a vinegar-drenched rag placed in front of their faces when they were attending the sick. They thought the smoke was purifying the air of disease. The smoke was made by burning a variety of things, from gunpowder to Rosemary. They suspected that the rats and mice might be carrying the disease, and by creating the strong odor, they believed it would drive the rodents and fleas from their homes.Burning Rosemary, which is a pleasant odor, proved to be so effective in ridding homes of pests that its use has continued down through the years. Even as late as World War II, rosemary incenses were burned in the hospitals of France to cleanse the air.The most famous and interesting story of healing coming out of the great Black Death plague was the story of the four thieves and their amazing concoction that came to be known as The Vinegar of the Four Thieves. History records that the four thieves were arrested for stealing from the homes of the many dead victims. After their arrest, they were taken from prison and forced to bury the dead with the promise that if they lived, they would go free. One of the thieves was an herbalist, whose herbal wine vinegar purportedly kept the four thieves alive all during the Black Death. As their resistance to the disease became obvious, others started using their vinegar tincture—reportedly with great success. They lived to credit the vinegar potion for their survival.

Liberty Island ist eine von mehreren Inseln nahe der Mündung des Hudson River. Auf ihr wehten die Fahnen von Holland, England und der Vereinigten Staaten. Für kurze Zeit wurde die Insel auch an Frankreich verliehen. Außerdem war sie in ihrer Geschichte Eigentum der Stadt New York City, des Bundesstaats New York, sowie verschiedener Privatpersonen.
Vor der Ankunft der europäischen Eroberer im 17. Jahrhundert war die Insel Gebiet des Indianerstammes der Mohegan. Unter holländischer Herrschaft wurde die Insel Eigentum von Isaack Bedloo, einem Kaufmann aus Calais. 1664 kam New York unter englische Herrschaft. Bedloo starb im Jahr 1673, worauf die Insel Teil seines Nachlasses blieb, bis 1732 seine Tochter Mary sie an Adolphe Philipse und Henry Lane für 5 Schilling verkaufte. Daraufhin wurde die Insel als Quarantänestation eingesetzt, um die Ausbreitung der Pocken einzudämmen. Archibald Kennedy kaufte sie 1746 mit der Absicht sie als Erholungsort für den Sommer zu verwenden. Daher rührt auch der Name Kennedys Island. Auf Drängen der Regierung wurde stattdessen ein Leuchtturm auf ihr errichtet. Seit 1756 wurde die Insel erneut als Quarantänestation eingesetzt. Kennedy verkaufte sie schließlich für 1000 £ an die Stadt New York, die darauf ein Krankenhaus baute. In den folgenden Jahren wurde sie an verschieden Personen für unterschiedliche Zeiträume verpachtet.
Während des Amerikanischen Unabhängigkeitskrieges wurde die Insel 1776 von den Briten erobert und diente als Zuflucht für Unterstützer der britischen Partei. Während der Unruhen wurden die Gebäude auf der Insel von Rebellen aus diesem Grund in Brand gesetzt. Nach dem Krieg fiel das Gebiet an den Staat New York, und in den 1780er Jahren wurde erneut ein Krankenhaus errichtet, außerdem war die Insel bekannt als geeignete Gegend, um Austern zu fischen. Während dieser Zeit wurde 1793 die Insel auch für drei Jahre an Frankreich verliehen.
Bedloes Island wurde 1796 dem Staat New York anvertraut, doch schon im Jahr 1800 wurde die Insel schließlich der Bundesregierung der Vereinigten Staaten übergeben. Sie beschloss, auf Bedloes Island (und auch auf Governors Island und Ellis Island) Verteidigungsanlagen zu errichten, um den New Yorker Hafen zu schützen. So entstand die Festung Fort Wood (benannt nach Colonel Elenzer Wood) in Form eines elfspitzigen Sternes, die 1811 fertiggestellt wurde und ein Jahr später während des Britisch-Amerikanischen Krieges bemannt wurde. Über 50 Jahre lang war die Insel Militärzone. Charles Gibbs, der letzte in den USA gehängte Pirat, kam 1831 auf Bedloes Island an den Galgen.
1877 wurde Bedloes Island als Standort für die Freiheitsstatue ausgewählt. Am 28. Oktober 1886 erfolgte die Enthüllung der fertigen Statue. Erst 1937 wurde die Verwaltung über die Insel vom Kriegsministerium auf das Innenministerium übertragen, militärische Einrichtungen auf der Insel abgerissen und die Statue renoviert. Erst im Jahr 1944 wurde das Fort definitiv geschlossen und 1948 vollständig abgerissen.
1960 ließ Präsident Dwight D. Eisenhower die Insel in Liberty Island umbenennen.
Nach dem 11. September 2001 wurde die Insel für die Öffentlichkeit gesperrt.
