The four-minute compilation from 1938 exists only because of a technological fluke and the enthusiasm of two television buffs, one in Britain and the other in America where, thanks to freak atmospheric conditions, it was picked up and recorded on a cine camera placed in front of a television screen as the images came in.
Andrew Emmerson, the British enthusiast, spent five years tracking down the recording and believes it is the only surviving example of pre-war live high-definition British television. The flickering black-and-white footage includes Jasmine Bligh, one of the original BBC announcers, and a brief shot of Elizabeth Cowell, who also shared announcing duties with Jasmine, an excerpt from an unknown period costume drama and the BBC's station identity transmitted at the beginning and end of the day's output.
It was made at a time when no technology existed to record live broadcasts directly. Video tape was not perfected until the late 1950s and "telerecording", the quality copying with a cine camera mounted in front of a television screen was not developed until after the Second World War. There are other recordings from the pre-war era, but they are all cine film shot from a camera alongside the television lens, or as in the case of the Demonstration Films, recreated scenes in a shot in a film studio.
The American recording was shown on 26 June 1999 at the refurbished National Museum of Photography, Film and Television in Bradford.
Mr Emmerson, 50, a freelance researcher and writer on the television industry, said: "Rumours of a recording existing in America have circulated for years, but no one had ever got to the bottom of them. It was known that about this time there had been tremendous sun spot activity, which had a dramatic effect on the ionosphere. Broadcasts from the BBC Television Station at Alexandra Palace travelled less than 30 miles, but because of the sun spots they were being bounced off the ionosphere and picked up 3,000 miles away on the East Coast of America."
"There were reports that RCA, which was working on its own television system, had conducted an experiment to film the broadcasts. About five years ago I decided to check it out, but with no success. RCA could not trace anything, nor could anyone else. Then last year a friend at the American Vintage Wireless Collectors' Society agreed to mention it in their magazine."
One of the respondents was Maurice Schecheter, who worked in a New York television studio. He had a collection of television material and among it was one of the RCA recordings on 16mm film.
"He cleaned it up digitally and transferred it to a video cassette for me," Mr Emmerson said. "I was astounded. This was the oldest and probably the only example of live high-definition television from the pre-war period."

Inspirational footage from coolbluefilms.com filmed while on a Whale Shark Expedition with Scuba Safaris during August 2008 on board the Aggressor fleet. Seeing this it is difficult to beleive that this area - although a protected national park, does not maintain fully protected fishing and finning restrictions.
The cast (in rough order of appearance), are Dolphins, Sea Lion, Galapagos Shark, Scalloped Hammerhead, Spotted Eagle Ray, Turtle, Sting Ray, Whale Shark, Silky Shark, Moray Eel, Sea Horse,Guineafowl Puffer, Black Striped Salema and a huge shoal of Jack. Many of these species are indemic to the Galapagos islands.
You can just spot the very welcome special visit from a Tiger Shark rarely seen in this location and "Captain America" Jim Roberts bids farewell at the end.

The caption let us know this South American potentate was a killer, an autocrat, and the people of his nation wanted him out. The caption continued: "[Venezuelans] marched Saturday to demand his resignation and punishment for those responsible for 17 deaths during a coup in April. 'Chavez leave now!' read a huge banner."
There was no actual story in the Chronicle -- South America simply isn't worth wasting words on -- just the photo and caption. But the Chronicle knew no story was needed. Venezuelans hated their terrible president, and all you needed was this photo to prove it.
And I could confirm the large protests. I'd recently returned from Caracas and watched 100,000 march against President Chavez. I'd filmed them for BBC Television London.

You'd think George Bush would get down on his knees and kiss Hugo Chavez's behind. Not only has Chavez delivered cheap oil to the Bronx and other poor communities in the United States. And not only did he offer to bring aid to the victims of Katrina. In my interview with the president of Venezuela on March 28, he made Bush the following astonishing offer: Chavez would drop the price of oil to $50 a barrel, "not too high, a fair price," he said — a third less than the $75 a barrel for oil recently posted on the spot market. That would bring down the price at the pump by about a buck, from $3 to $2 a gallon.

Jackie Chan is planning to create a film about the victims from the earthquake in China. The martial arts movie star has already reportedly donated $1.4 million to those affected by the natural disaster. He tells the BBC he hopes the film will be another way to solicit funds for quake survivors. The Chinese actor says he's happy to see help coming in from other countries.
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie now own a new home in the south of France. A source tells E! News the pair purchased a $60 million estate that includes 1,000 acres of land, 35 bedrooms and a vineyard. The estate is named Chateau Miraval and it's apparently surrounded by trees, giving the couple a private sanctuary. Pitt and Jolie are reportedly furniture shopping for their new abode.
"Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" topped box offices over the holiday weekend. The Los Angeles Times reports the fourth installment of the series, starring Harrison Ford, has reportedly taken in an estimated $151 million so far in North America. "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian" with Ben Barnes, Georgie Henley and William Moseley dropped to No.2...and "Iron Man" with Robert Downey Jr. is holding onto the No. 3 spot. That's according to Box Office Mojo.
Cristian de la Fuente is recovering after an operation to repair a torn bicep. The actor's doctor says the "Dancing With the Stars" finalist is expected to make a full recovery. The Chilean star took home third place in the dance off, despite sustaining the injury while performing the samba nearly a month ago. He will reportedly be in a splint for about a week before beginning rehab.
The Cannes Film Festival wrapped up on Sunday with a screening of the film "What Just Happened?" The movie's star, Robert de Niro, stepped out for the event. French director Laurent Cantet won the Palm d'Or, the festival's top prize, for his film "Entre les Murs." The jury reportedly voted unanimously on the award, marking the first time a French film has won the prize since 1987.

I am trying to let everyone in Wales who I know, know about my fame all over the world because Welsh Media who started off my stories now refuse to do any because I have my own book out with the title, (A Serial Shaggers Guide to Internet Dating, 1001 lovers), and my fame is growing all over the world but no one in Wales gets to know this, I keep coming across People I know, who say to me, (do not here much about you lately), Or do they know I got a book out, I just been on Sky TV, (UK People), but they did not know, also I just done 6 Radio interviews so far this year, Radio, BBC Newcastle, BBC Birmingham, BBC Wiltshire, Cardiff XFM, BBC London and BBC 6 Music Gorge Lamb Show, also just been out on papers in Swindon, Newbury, Birmingham, South Yorkshire Star, so far this year because they are picking up video clips I put on YouTube and other sites I am on like, Bebo, MySpace, Facebook, all this helps sell my book, that is out all over the world, on Amazon, Pickabook.Com, Tesco.Com, Play.Com, W.H.Smith, Waterston's, Blackwell, over 30, sites in all but still not rich, publishers take their BIG, Big cut first. Also People in Wales, do not know I been out on TV all over the world, BBC America, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and all over Europe, 3 times in all with one of 3 documentaries, (My 100,000 lovers), type this into Google search, you will see this, my other doc was (Studs of Suburbia), for Channel 4, then BBC Wales, Week in Week out, when I had a shock to see pretty blond news reader Sian Lloyd, come here to interview me in my bedroom, with me sitting on my bed, I kept asking Sian to sit with me on my bed but she would not. S4C been here as well and I been out on 10 Magazines, Chat Mag & Chat its fate Mag, Women's Own Mag, Pick me up Mag, What's on TV Mag, when I was on Channel 5, Observer Mag, Loaded Mag, Times Mag and Observer Mag, then one in Wales, Golwg Mag in Welsh, then Papers, The Sun, Wales on Sunday Twice, Sunday and Daily Mirror, Daily Mail, Daily Express, Times and Telegraph, been in few magazines and papers in Australia, Canada and New Zealand and on Radio out there, Google search me Clive Worth, keep reading, you'll get to see all this. Arkın Ilıcalı, better known as Mercan Dede, also known as DJ Arkın Allen, is a Turkish composer, ney and bendir player, DJ and producer. He divides his time between Turkey, Europe and North America. He is a world music artist, playing a fusion of (traditionally acoustic) Turkish and other oriental musics with electronic sounds.
His best known albums include Seyahatname, Su, and Nar. He has worked in collaboration with Turkish and international musicians such as Susheela Raman, Dhafer Youssef, Sheema Mukherjee (Transglobal Underground) and Hugh Marsh. His last album 800 has been selected as the World's Best World Music Album of 2008 by WOMEX. Mercan Dede has been nominated by BBC 3 Awards for World Music in the Middle East & North Africa category twice and 3 times most recently in 2005 in the Club Global category. His album "Su" stayed at #1 spot for two months on the European World Music Charts.
He plays with groups of various sizes and fluctuating membership; the Mercan Dede Trio, the Mercan Dede Ensemble, the Secret Tribe etc. The instrumentation includes electronics and the elements of classical Turkish music such as the ney (which he plays himself), percussion, violin, and zither. The groups often include Montreal-based percussionist Scott Russell and Canadian violinist Hugh Marsh and Turkish clarinetist Hüsnü Şenlendirici. The shows often include men and women in Sufi costume doing the Sufi whirling.
