Advice columnists Dan Savage and Amy Richards argue that abstinence-only sex education does not adequately instruct teens on the realities of sexual health. This program contains sexually explicit language.
-----
In the July 18th, 2004 issue of The New York Times Magazine, feminist activist Amy Richards gave her account of deciding to undergo "selective reduction." The procedure reduces the number of fetuses carried by a pregnant woman - in Richards' case, from triplets to one baby.
Her controversial choice reignited debates about reproductive freedom and the ethics of choice. Richards recounts the backlash of the article and the many challenges of raising her son in Opting In: Having a Child Without Losing Yourself. Richards is co-founder of The Third Wave Foundation and has written feminist.com's advice column "Ask Amy" since 1995.
Internationally-syndicated columnist Dan Savage dispenses with taboos when writing about sex and relationships. Since 1991, his column "Savage Love" has offered advice that examines and dispels conservative models of love, sex, and family.
With great humor, Savage encourages a "good, giving, and game" approach to safe sexual experimentation and skepticism of "simplistic" views of monogamy. Dan Savage is also a contributor to "This American Life" and editorial director of The Stranger, the Seattle weekly that first published his popular column.
His book The Kid relates Savage's experiences adopting a baby boy with his partner. The Commitment: Love, Sex, Marriage, and My Family, his memoir of family, includes Savage's commentary on the gay marriage debate - City Arts and Lectures
Daniel Savage is an American sex advice columnist, author, media pundit, journalist, and newspaper editor. Savage is best known for penning the internationally syndicated relationship and sex advice column Savage Love. Its tone is humorous, profane, and often hostile to social conservatives, as in the Santorum controversy.
Savage has often been the subject of controversy regarding his opinions that pointedly clash with both traditional conservative moral values and those put forth by what Savage has been known to call the "gay establishment".

Political Abstinence
by Rob Jacik
If you would've told me five weeks ago that I wouldnt be absolutely consumed by this election right now I never would have believed you. I'd been hooked on politics for years and I'd been absorbing every angle of this election season with an unquenchable thirst.
I couldnt get enough. I spent hours on my computer hopping from web site to web site and from blog to blog looking for the latest politically oriented tidbit about Barack Obama, John McCain or Sarah Palin.
I consumed the information ravenously. Then I'd churn it over and over again in my mind preparing myself for my next political debate I was ready to defeat any political foe with facts and figures, with the details from the latest scandal or perhaps with a bit of propaganda.
Then I went on a business trip to Seattle and everything changed. I was so busy with meetings, presentations and working dinners that I had no time for the media no time for my usual trolling of political web sites for news and commentary.
Then I realized how refreshed my mind felt after going a full week without consuming any media at all. My mind was calm. I wasnt having mental arguments with imaginary opponents and the seeds of negativity werent sprouting a garden of weeds across my mind.
I enjoyed the feeling so much that I decided then and there to go cold turkey no more politics until Election Day. I already knew who I was voting for in each of the major races and I knew there was little, if anything, that could change my mind. That was it, no more politics no more political web sites, no more blogs, no more videos, no more e-mails, no more radio talk shows and I dont watch television, but if I did, no more political TV programs.
Absolutely nothing until Election Day...except...I wound up making a couple of exceptions. First, I permitted myself to watch the Presidential debates and second, I permitted myself to visit either Barack Obama or John McCains websites. That was all.
I was surprised with myself after the first week I found my political abstinence far easier than anticipated. While political headlines did grab my attention, I managed to resist the urge to read further. Then I watched the first Presidential debate and after 90 minutes realized Id learned nothing new.
When the Vice Presidential debate came around I was remarkably uninterested. And when the next Presidential debate came around I was downright apathetic, but decided to watch it anyway.
After watching twenty minutes of Barack Obama and John McCain spitting venom back and forth I decided to turn it off. While I had always known politics to be negative, with my fresh new political eyes the negativity of the candidates was overwhelming. It was as if Id worn the same cologne everyday for a year, then stopped altogether only to pull out an old shirt that I had worn weeks earlier and found the scent overpowering.
I've since changed all of my XM Radio presets no more political talk shows. I then cleared all of my political favorites from my web browser and unsubscribed from all political newsletters and distribution lists.
And today I cant believe how great it feels. My spirit is uplifted without the pundits pumping their poison into my veins. Now that I am cleansed, Ill stay focused on the positive and I doubt after Election Day Ill ever go back.
My name is Rob and Ive been politically abstinence for five weeks. Dec. 4, 2007: A new study says abstinence-only education doesn't work, but federal funding has increased $28 million. Auteur : duckofprey Tags: rachel maddow air america radio dan abrams abstinence only education valerie huber | | Abstinence Only - Does Not Work! Duh! - 600 sec JUST TELLING OUR KIDS "DON'T DO IT" DOES NOT WORK!
Guess what folks, teaching abstinence-only to young adolescent teens fails in all the studies except the ones conducted by the abstinence-only advocates. Isn't that a shocker? Well, to anyone with a few brain cells, that was a given. From the very beginning, when Bush and his followers rejoiced and couldn't wait to hit us over the head with their abstinence-ONLY asinine program. Of course, we should teach our teenage children good judgement, if that is at all possible when it comes to the powerful instinctual urges belonging to all life, the drive to BEGET. Try telling a teeny bobber about love and responsibility. They'll look at you, the same way you look at a dog chasing its tail, bewilderment of such a stupidity lag.
But, for most parents, the teen "eye roll" just slides off their back, down to the floor where it can be easily stepped on.
But all sarcasm aside, teaching this program alone is not just block-headed, its outrageously dangerous. By not equipping our young with knowledge on self preservation, we neglect the most basic fact of life, the instinctive teachings of fundamental survival techniques. Go and watch some wild life with their young and you will see such training.
Birds do it, Bees do it, even Monkeys in the trees do it. Let's do it, lets teach our young important "no brainer" essentials, so they can make informed decisions to help preserve our species.

Our kids need accurate information about birth control and contraception, they need to know how to manage their feelings and urges before the emotions and hormones kick in. Unplanned pregnancy rates and STD cases are up and it's time to scrap "Abstinence Only".
