Los antiguos egipcios llamaban a su país "kemet", es decir, la tierra negra, para diferenciarlo del desierto que lo rodeaba o "deshret", la tierra roja, que ocupa el 90 % del país. También se llamaban a sí mismos "remet-en-kemet", el pueblo de la tierra negra, esto es, de la tierra cultivable. La tierra negra no era otra cosa que el fértil limo que el Nilo depositaba durante la inundación anual hasta donde podían llegar sus aguas.
El Nilo se originó gracias a la unión de dos grandes ríos, el Nilo Blanco y el Nilo Azul. Ambos se unen en Sudán y recogen las fuertes lluvias del monzón, provocando sus crecidas periódicas. El Nilo empezaba a crecer a mediados de julio, la estación akhet, e inundaba las tierras cercanas durante cuatro meses. Para los egipcios, esto señalaba la llegada del dios Hapy, el dios del río, quien traía consigo riqueza y prosperidad.
El caudaloso Nilo forma a su paso un inmenso y fértil valle. La zona sur recibe el nombre de Alto Egipto. Tras un trayecto de unos 6.000 km, el río, a medida que se acerca al mar, se subdivide en diversos brazos, que los griegos llamaron Delta, por la semejanza con la letra de su alfabeto. Es el Bajo Egipto. Al este del río se extiende el montañoso Desierto Oriental, que desciende hasta el Mar Rojo. Al oeste, el Desierto Occidental, sólo roto por la presencia de unos cuantos pero valiosísimos oasis.
La historia de Egipto comienza hacia el 3100 a.C., cuando Narmer unifica el Alto y Bajo Egipto en un solo reino y establece la capital en Menfis. Hacia el 2600 a.C. comienza el Imperio Antiguo, un periodo de paz y prosperidad durante el cual se construyó la primera pirámide, en Saqarah. Con la IV dinastía, se pasa de la pirámide escalonada a la pirámide propiamente dicha, cuyos mejores ejemplos encontramos en Gizeh.
Hacia el 2200 a.C. Egipto comienza una etapa de fuertes convulsiones, en la que el Estado se fragmenta y la capital se traslada a Heracleópolis. Una guerra civil estalla entre esta ciudad y Tebas, de la que saldrá vencedor Mentuhotep II, príncipe tebano. Con él comienza el Imperio Medio, un periodo de expansión en el que se mejoran la administración y el ejército o se conquista Nubia, por parte de Sesostris I. Este periodo de tranquilidad declinó con la invasión de los hicsos, etapa conocida como II Periodo Intermedio.
Hacia el año 1550 a.C. de nuevo el poder se traslada a Tebas. Egipto vive entonces su mayor esplendor, durante el Imperio Nuevo. Tutmosis es el primer faraón que se hace construir una tumba en el Valle de los Reyes. Su hermana Hatshepsut sube al trono y manda levantar el templo funerario de Deir el-Bahari...
