The Sinhalese arrived in Sri Lanka late in the 6th century B.C., probably from northern India. Buddhism was introduced beginning in about the mid-third century B.C., and a great civilization developed at the cities of Anuradhapura (kingdom from circa 200 B.C. to circa A.D. 1000) and Polonnaruwa (from about 1070 to 1200). Broadway Cares/Equity Fights Aids' 19th Annual Gypsy of the Year competition, one of Broadway's most celebrated Fund Raising events, decided to make tribute to 50 years of West Side Story. They flew from all over the country 22 cast members of the Original 1957 Production and put together with young Broadway Gypsies a historical Opening Number.
This is the rehearsal at AEA audition auditorium on 12/16/2007 where the Young Broadway generation performs snipits of the legendary Jerrome Robins Choreography, and the original cast members join to creat one of the most moving and thrilling opening numbers of BC/EFA.
You will see Ken LeRoy (original Bernardo), Mickey Calin (original Riff) along with all original Jets performing the "Jet Song", Carol Lawrence (original Maria) performing "I am Prety", followed by Chita Rivera for their "A Boy like that" duet. Chita Dancers from "A Dancer's Life" do "the Dance at the Gym" with Chita and moving finale with all of us singing the "quintette"
Other original 1957 cast members are Jamie Sanchez (Chino) and Reri Grist (Consuelo).

When her time came to make her 3-minute statement, she tugged her black headscarf over her hair, stepped up to the microphone, and with emotional electricity made the speech that would alter her life.
After she spoke, there was a moment of stunned silence. Then there was an uproar. Male mujahideen, some who literally had guns at their feet, rushed towards her, shouting. She was brought under the protection of UN security forces.
In a nation where few dare to say the word "warlord" aloud, Joya had spoken fiercely against a proposal to appoint high clergy members and fundamentalist leaders to guide planning groups. She objected that several of those religious leaders were war criminals who should be tried for their actions—not national heroes to influence the new government.
Despite the commands of Assembly Chairman, Joya refused to apologize.
Today, as a result of her legendary actions, Malalai Joya has become popular hero in Afghanistan. She speaks at rallies where thousands of people carry her photo high.
